Howrah earned the name "Sheffield of the East" for its light-engineering workshops, and it still has foundries, forging units and small manufacturers in areas such as Liluah, alongside traders, transporters and schools. Many small and mid-size units still track their work on paper job cards, registers and spreadsheets.
